PE and Sport
Health and PE (Sport) is a vital part of a school curriculum. Not only are there obvious health benefits from having happy, healthy and active students, there are myriad social and personal development benefits from a well-run program of physical activity and sport. Our Sport and PE program is a priority for Warrnambool West Primary School, not only for its own sake but also for its undeniable benefits in supporting students in their learning and wellbeing.
We have a dedicated HPE Specialist teacher. Students particpate in weekly PE sessions, Junior (including the Perceptual Motor Program) and Senior School Community sports as well as special local and district events. The focus of our Physical Education and Sport program is on maximum participation, skill development and the essential areas of personal development that involvement in sport encourages.
Warrnambool West Primary School Primary adheres to the recommendations of the DET to provide children with a strong sport foundation to develop a lifelong love of physical activity. Physical activity for children has been linked to:
- engaging students in schooling;
- improved fitness levels leading to improved focus and concentration for longer periods of time;
- enhancing self-esteem, emotional wellbeing and future expectations;
- higher academic outcomes;
- lower rates of anti-social behaviour.
Warrnambool West offers students sporting opportunities both at a school level and at higher levels such as district, division and state. At a school level all students participate in weekly Physical Education sessions as mandated by the Department of Education and Training (DET). The school also holds annual Athletics and Cross Country Carnivals where students participate to earn points for their house teams and can qualify to participate in division events.
Years 3-6 students have the opportunity to participate in inter-school sport days throughout the year. The chosen sports vary from year to year but include sports such as football, netball, tennis and Basketball.
